The Drasche Family has
been involved in the construction and maintaining of pianos for over one
hundred years—and
not just any pianos. For four generations the Drasche family learned
their trade from the prestigious Steinway & Sons Company. Whether it was
woodworking, action design, action regulation and voicing, or tuning,
the Drasches have shown a natural affinity for the world's best pianos
and have greatly contributed to their design, construction and
maintenance. The tradition continues today, with Stephen Drasche
presiding over the rebuilding and refurbishing of pianos at Drasche
Pianos. |

and dampers and the art of tuning. This enabled him to work on pianos
outside of the factory and experience a wider range of pianos from
different eras and from various manufacturers. Over the years, he has
developed his craft and has become well known and respected among his
clients and his peers.
StephEn left Steinway & Sons in 1984 to start Drasche
Pianos.

In the late 1800s, Johann Drasche worked for Steinway in Astoria,
Queens. His two sons, George and Fred, followed him into the piano
business. George worked in the Steinway mill for over 50 years. Fred
became what is known as a "tone regulator" and gave the Steinway piano
its famous sound.
Johann's grandson, Walter (Stephen's father) developed a procedure to
ensure that the Steinway piano actions would stay free and easy
regardless of temperature and humidity changes. Walter is listed as
inventor of this procedure, US Patent Number 4386455, Walter spent 49
years working for Steinway. |
